The fishing village of Donnalucata is an insiders’ tip if you want to spend wonderful days at the seaside and, at the same time, get to know the Baroque culture of southern Sicily.
Donnalucata’s history dates back to the 11th century, when the Norman Count Ruggero d’Altavilla, according to legend with the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, defeated the Saracens and then erected a pilgrimage chapel (santuario). In the course of time, the village then developed around the church and the watch tower.
At Donnalucata, and far from mass tourism, you experience idyllic everyday village life. People there still live mainly on farming and fishing. The fish market, which is a real experience for your senses, takes place at the harbor every morning.
In the center of Donnalucata, you find bars, stores and restaurants. After visiting the fish market in the morning, stop at one of the bars for a colazione italiana (Italian breakfast) of cappuccino and fresh cornetto.
In the evening, treat yourself to a delicious fish dish at one of the restaurants and, afterwards, take a romantic walk along the gorgeous seaside promenade.
If you know or rather have watched the Commissario Montalbano TV series, some of the places at Donnalucata might or will seem familiar to you. The town featured as one of the settings in several films of the well-known series, amongst others "La voce del violin" ("The Voice of the Violin"), "Il cane di terracotta" ("The Terracotta Dog") and "La forma dell'acqua" ("The Shape of Water").
Movie scenes were also shot at other towns in the area, for example at Scicli, Modica and Ragusa.
