Seaside holiday home near Ispica - Baroque 'town of churches' on a white limestone plateau

Ispica in the southeast of Sicily was called Spaccaforno until 1935 and then renamed for the nearby gorge Cava d’Ispica.

The gorge, 13 km in length, ends at Ispica and up to the 1693 earthquake, the original settlement was actually located within it. The town was then rebuilt in baroque splendor on a white limestone plateau outside the gorge and is surrounded by a fertile landscape.

The basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, located in the square of the same name, is worth a closer look. Inside you get to admire stucco-decorated ceilings and frescos by Olivio Sozzi.

Excursion into baroque surroundings

If you are interested in culture, you will find some places worth visiting in the area around Ispica.
UNESCO World Heritage listed Modica, for example, is a worthwhile destination and only a stone’s throw away. The setting of the town with its narrow terraced alleys within the wild-romantic landscape is close to perfect. The ruins of the castle with its conspicuously large clock tower catch your eye immediately.

Also nearby, but a bit closer to the sea lies Scicli, another UNESCO listed town, where Sicilian Baroque and beautifully laid-out squares await you.

Wide sandy beaches and the nature reserve of the Irminio River

Beach enthusiasts and water bugs are sure to get their money’s worth at the wide sandy beaches between Portopalo, Santa Marina del Focallo and Scoglitti.

Riserva Naturale del Fiume Irminio lies about halfway between Marina di Ragusa and Donnalucata, where the Irminio river flows into the sea. Dune beaches (and a swim in the sea), typical macchia mediterranea and rare species of animals make for the charm of the Irminio River Nature Reserve.

Kitesurfing at Santa Maria del Focallo
